ISRAEL-LEBANON: Status of Withdrawal
Israel continued to wsthdraw its troops from West Besrut as
the first elements of the French contingent of the multinational
force took up positions sn the stadium area. Unhappiness ovr
s recent events n Beirut has surfaced in the Israeli, military.
The Lebanese Army assumed control of the As Sanayi'
area yesterday and is scheduled to enter Ra's Beirut
today.

the high ground surrounding the city.
in addition
to the resignation of the commanding general of the Army
Command and Staff School, the commander of the parachute
training school has asked to meet with Prime Minister
r\ Begin. The commander reportedly intends to register his
dissatisfaction and that of 25 other senior officers with
the government's handling of recent events in Beirut.
Comment: Israeli forces probably will only withdraw
from West Beirut by tomorrow. The withdrawal
is likely to occur some time in the future.

The government's agreement to convene a commission
of inquiry may head off more resignations by senior
officers. Sharon's credibility in the military, however,
has been dealt a serious blow.
The commanding general of the Army Command and Staff
School was one of Israel's most brilliant young officers.
His decision to resign indicates the shock and guilt felt
by many officers is growing.
