Department of Justice Request for
Information on Alleged Nazi War Criminals '
1. The Office Of Special Investigations (OSI), Depart- .
ment of Justice has recently submitted to this office biographic
data sheets (copies attached) on approximately 272 persons
who are of interest to the Department in its investigation
of alleged Nazi war criminals. Included in this group are
prospective witnesses and relative and/or associates of the
alleged war criminals as well as the :war criminals themselves.
2. In a 21-February 1980 meeting with officials of the
OSI, it was agreed that the Directorate of Operations (DO)
would check these names through the STAR 'system using the
following procedures:
a. Only "on-the-head" trace-will be run. 41.e.
no FNUis will be conSidered).
b. DO responses will be No Trace, No Positively
Identifiable Information, Possibly Identifiable Infor-
mation is Available, or Information on Subject is
Available, whichever is applicable.

3. EIR will see that a number of these names have
already been traced through the STAR system. The under-
signed has checked these names a ainst revious re ue t
received from OSI
4. In addition to tracing the names on the attached
biographic data sheets through the STAR system (with the
exceptions noted in paragraph 3 supra) it is also requested
that EIR maintain a temporary working list of the individuals
traced in this sexercise. The working list should include
the name of the individual, the OSI indentification number
and a notation indicating whether or not information on that
individual is available. This information should be retrievable
by name and by OSI indentification number.
5. While no completion deadline has been set for this
exercise, it is requested that EIR process this request as
expeditiously as is consistent with current obligations.
