CYPRUS
President Makarios has outlined measures to increase
pressure on the outlawed EOKA-B, the pro-enosis (union
with Greece) group, in an effort to curb the current wave
of violence which has led to at least five deaths, in-
cluding that of a British citizen. Makarios plans to
step up searches for guerrillas and weapons; purge about
100 anti-Makarios police, teachers, and civil servants;
and deny religious privileges to anti-government clergy.
In addition, the Cypriot police force is to be strength-
ened, and added security is to be provided for government
officials.
Makarios sees the terrorism as the implementation
of a long-standing underground plan of assassinations and
bombings. Targets include several government and politi-
cal leaders, including leftist Makarios supporter Vassos
Lyssarides and ten pro-Makarios police. Attacks on police ve-
hicles throughout the country are also expected.
Although violence may continue for some time,
EOKA-B probably still lacks the leadership and unity to
be a serious threat to the government.
