EOKA-B Resumes Violence
EOKA-B, the Greek Cypriot terrorist organiza-
tion which favors enosis--the union of Cyprus and
Greece--recently launched a new offensive against
the Makarios government. In the past two weeks
EOKA-B has been responsible for a series of explo-
sions and four political murders. Police have
responded by arresting over sixty alleged EOKA-B
supporters.
Makarios reportedly believes that the govern-
ment's all out effort of the past two months to
destroy the organization have caused its competing
factions to unite in a campaign of violence.
Makarios is confident, however, that the terrorists
cannot sustain this campaign and that it no longer
poses a real threat to the government.
Makaribs is presently attempting to gain greater
control over the island's Greek officered national
guard because of its alleged collusion with EOKA-S.
He believes the terrorist offensive is timed to
pressure him to cease his effort to curb the national
guard. Makarios reportedly plans to intensify his
actions against EOKA-B, purge the bureaucracy of all
anti-government elements, and convene the holy
synod of the Church of Cyprus to deal with the fol-
lowers of the four defrocked bishops who support
the terrorists.
Since the death of DOKA-B leader Grivas last January, his
followers have qparre161 over whether his =mess= shailla be
a mainland Greek or a native Greek Cypriot and
whether to continue the terrorist campaign or turn
to political action. The beating of a group of
Makarios supporters by EOKA-B on April 22 prompted
Makarios to outlaw the organization and set a dead-
line of April 27 for a general amnesty extended in
January. He also announced his determination to

wipe out the remnants of EOKA-B. Only a few wanted
men turned themselves in before the deadline, thereby
setting the stage for more clashes.
