Small Soviet detachments � apparently are remaining at certain key points, however, and Soviet troops are still present in the general border areas. 2. US to support on-the -spoLGreek border investigation�The State Depart- ment has advised tIS Embassy Athens, in connection with the Greek com- plaint to the Security Council, that at present "it is envisaged that the US will strongly support on-the-spot-investigation and, if necessary, make amply clear the fact that there is more reason for such investigation now than there was in September." 3. Greece's nes11.12Ltrans Military Attache Athens reports an imperative need of aid to the Greek armed forces and declares that the British plan to issue sufficient equipment to increase the Army from 98,200 to approximately 115,000. Emphasizing the "extreme importance" of air supply for present operations, the MA requests a statement of US policy on providing the Greek Air Force with 8 C-47 aircraft. 4. Turkish Ambassador skeptical of Soviet conciliation--The US Represent- ative to the UN reports that Ambassador to the US Baydur, the Turkish UN representative, believes that the new Soviet conciliatory line is attri- butable to the firm stand taken by the US.
