Egypt's military-civilian-bureaucratic class and secular elite
thought that democracy only meant getting rid of Mubarek. There
should not be any Mubarek and there should definitely not be any
Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt is to change but not in the direction
that
the majority wants. The Mubarek regime's elite all plan to continue
on their path by structuring the country to match their own world.
That is the reason why those who put up with Mubarek for 30 years

sent Mursi packing with a coup after just one year. For the elite
true democracy is always more problematic than a cruel dictator
because democracies call for elections, and there is no way they
could ever win one of those.
As long as Muhammad Mursi stayed in power the old guard stood to
lose
power. So they used the only means they had available and struck
while the iron was still hot.
If Mubarek were to say, "If you were going to set a coup against
democracy why did you depose me to begin with" he would have a
point
because Egypt only has two choices before it: democracy or
dictatorship. Once that choice was made there was no need for
anyone
other than Mubarek.
This is the reality that is Egypt. Do not assume that the coup was
carried out by the Egyptian army, which resembles a giant
corporation
more than it does an armed force.
No, it was not the army that staged this coup, it was Islamophobia.
The coup unfolded before everybody's eyes while the entire world
was
watching. Europe and the United States in an unprecedented act of
hypocrisy and dual standards turned a blind eye to the putchists
and
encouraged them. This coup took place so easily but would not have
if
only two capital cities had said they would not recognize it.
In a country that had held its first free election in 5,000 years
they never gave democracy the chance even to learn how to crawl.
They
applauded the "new regime" with fake expressions of "concern."
The situation in which not just Washington, Paris, London or
Moscow,
but the entire European Union is included in, is a salute to the
coup.
Just a few days ago the union and its members were passing judgment
and issuing one statement after the other about the environment

debates in Turkey, but after the coup in Cairo they shut up shop
and
disappeared.
Ultimately, the coup was against the "Muslim" Brotherhood, not
against their own brothers.
Let us name it for what it is. They could have made room for all
those countries experiencing democracy but when the country in
question was a Muslim one the "phobia" prevailed. They did not want
to undertake the risk of merging Islam and democracy one more time.
The flourishing, the advance, the development and the spread of the
Arab Spring worried the West enough to approve a coup. The new
balances, the new diplomacy and the new economy that would have
been
formed with democracy in the Islamic world spooked Europe's
capitals.
They took the first opportunity they could find and embraced the
tried and tested methods of decades: Dictators are for the best!
No matter how many mistakes they make or how much they practice
dual
standards they do not have to answer to anyone. They do not have to
explain their inconsistencies to anyone.
There is more... The army is presenting them not just with the
vision
of destroying the democracy in Egypt but at the same time
resurrecting the autocracies in the entire region. If Egypt cannot
succeed nobody else can possibly succeed!
But that is not how it is going to be. The Arab Spring is going to
bounce back stronger than ever. The Arab streets will never allow
Mubarek to return to the system. The army took up arms to guarantee
more than half the administration in Egypt, but it is about to lose
all its shares.
The junta and its allies have their work cut out for them. They are
going to have to deal with a reaction that is besieging them more
and
more with each passing day, and they are going to lose power much
sooner than they anticipate. They are most likely going to stand
trial just as in all returning democracies...
