Pokemon Go - Advice to the
Workforce

1184,The recently released app "Pokemon Go" (PG) has become very
popular for many users in the Washington DC / Northern VA area. As
enjoyable as this app may be, DDI/SEC would like to offer the following
guidance regarding the use of PG by Agency officers.
irsst There are three areas of concern regarding the PG app for our officers.
They are as follows:
Geolocation Capability: One of the inherent functions of the
PG app is to interface the user's location with the app, providing a
virtual location to "hunt" the PG characters.
i'S.L2. Beaconing: Since the PG app release in Australia, New
Zealand, and the US on 6 July 2016, there have been incidental
reports of the PG app being used to "beacon" PG players to isolated
areas where they were victims of a criminal act. We highly
recommend if Agency officers wish to play the PG app when not at
work, they bring friends/family members to avoid being lured into
isolated areas.
Cell Phone Camera Use: One of the features of the PG app is
to overlay the PG "characters" with the user's cell phone camera -
thus, creating a virtual reality "capture" capability for the PG app
user. DDI/SEC reminds our employees that -
Additionally, images produced during the use of the PG
app and cell phone camera are stored outside of the user's cell
phone (similar to Google "Street View"), out of control of the user.
Since the PG app has only recently been released,
We highly recommend
our workforce think carefully before downloading the PG app, and
understand the implications of its use.
