Iraq: Extending the Range of FROG-7 Battlefield Rockets
Iraq has nearly doubled the range of its FROG-7 battlefield rockets, according to the
declaration it provided in December The refurbished rocket can deliver
its 420-kg payload to a range of about 130 km, according to the declaration. Iraq could lighten
the FROG-7 payload to reach more distant targets.
-- Iraq last July tested a modified FROG-7, according to the declaration, and
this rocket flew roughly 125 km.
-- Iraq is upgrading its aging FROG-7 inventory by replacing the double-base pro ellant
with more energetic composite solid propellant, according to the declaration
The status of this program is unclear, and inventory quantities were not included in the
declaration. With Iraq's successful flight tests and more than 40 available FROG-7 launchers,
Baghdad probably has a capability to field this system.
