The apparent disappearance of the Argentine ambassador to
Venezuela while visiting Buenos Aires this week adds yet
another incident to the picture of continuing political
violence in Argentina. A wave of abductions involving eleven
persons--eight lawyers and three of their wives�occurred in
Mar del Plata earlier this month. Three of those abducted
were subsequently released, but one lawyer has been found
dead. Responsibilitu for these kinds of acts is undetermined,
but they are usually the work of
hardline right-wing groups of military and civilian officials--
especially in the security services--who want to embarrass the -
relatively moderate Videla government.
