'alien I was assigned to Washington /191467, three men gave me instructions and my orders were signed by all three: I-talked to Marshal Rola-Zymierski at 1 Klonowa Street, Warsaw, the old Army headquarters. As Minister of National Defense, he is just a figurehead. Knowing the situation in Poland, I understood w what he meant when he asked me to cooperate with my assistant, but he did not openly order me to take orders from my assistant. I saw Lt Gen Murjan Spychalski, Vice Minister of Defense at the same address. He is in charge of political education, belongs to the secret police and, in my opinion, co- operates closely with Radkiewicz. I saw Gen Waclaw Komar at 5 Stalin Ave, which is a row of old officers r quarters thrown together. He is in charge of foreign military intelligence. 2. I was asked many questions and these were usually on matters of interest to the USSR rather than Poland. Gen Komar ordered me to inquire into the details of US Labor Unions, particularly CIO where Communist influence had already been established. He wanted me to report that the Communists mould succeed in taking over the CIO and Warsaw was very angry when I reported they mould fail. My assistant would disagree with me on these questions and he too would be very angry. A letter to my assistant from the Polish Embassy in Mexico City indicated an active interest in Colombia though there were no real Polish interests'-there. This was shortly before the attempted revolution at the _Al:n(6'0f the Pan-American Conference in Bogota. In the Washington EMbassy, Ambassadors Lange and Winiewicz were themselves closely watched by Ignacy Zlotowski who was Counselor of Embassy in addition _ to being a scientist. He was in close touch with Panyushkin at the USSR Embassyl-this was the channel of UbSR control over our Embassy. Zlotowski left before the spy talk in the US. Pe was replaced by Edward Bartol /early 1949 a very important Communist. Bartol writ, in actual charge of both intelligence and Communist party liaison and was sent to clean up the mess in which de- fections left the embassy. There will probably be considerable personnel shifts under him. My assistant, Col Alef-Bolkowiak, had the job of watching over me as Zlotowski watched over the Ambassador. (Fe had knowledge of the code, which I did not. He and the code clerk both were of the secret police. In USSR and satellite diplomacy, the code clerk always belongs to the secret police and the CP and is completely reliable and trusted.) Consul ileneral Jan Galewicz in New York is also a major cog in transmitting instructions and carrying on busine with the US CP.
