Haiti: A small, well-armed
rebel force landed on the south-
eastern coast of Haiti on the
afternoon of 29 June. The rebels,
who allegedly came from the Do-
minican Republic, plan to start
blowing up bridges and police
posts sometime this week. There
have been two other unconfirmed
landings--one on the southwestern
tip of the country and one in the
northwest,
Although the Haitian mili-
tary establishment can handle
the rebels, it will be hard
pressed if reports of the sec-
ond and third landings turn
out to be true. The rugged
mountains in the southeastern
area will be advantageous to
the invaders. The most the
rebels can hope for, however,
is to remain in the mountains
and carry out hit-and-run guer-
rilla attacks. In any event,
the Duvalier dictatorship does
not appear to be in any imme-
diate danger.
