Mr. Dulles:
Mr. Richard Sallet Germany called to say he has a
letter of introduction to you from Mr. Philip Marshall Brown of
South Carolina. Mr. Sallet will be in Washington for a few days
and would like to see you.
I called the Division re info on Mr. Sallet, and they said
they have quite a file on him; at one time one of our people was in
touch with him but for a variety of reasons they decided not to pursue
the matter. He is a rather controversial figure, and there is a great
deal in his background which indicates a dubious character.
Mr. SaUtt has a lot of American friends and went to college
In America. He spent some time in Washington before the war with the
German diplomatic instillation here.
Mr. Sallet was a member of the Nazi party, and was con-
sidered more or less a Nazi although he took great pains to deny this.
After the war he tried to resume his American friendships and contacts.
The American Embassy in Germany does not take a very
high view of this man and did not give him letters of introduction to
people here. An official of the German Embassy called on the Depart-
ment earlier this summer and said he wanted to make it clear that Mr.
Sallet was not connected with the Embassy here. It is understood that
Mr. Sallet did see Congressman Reece (Tennessee), and Senator Mundt
on one of his visits to the States.
Mr. Sallet's present position is more or less that of a lobbyist
for an interest group in Germany. It is possibly in this connection that
he wishes to see you. Do you wish to see him? (Dupont 7-7320).
