Thanks for your quick response. Tomorrow is jammed for me as well -- I've got Geithner at lunch time and
some White House interviews in the afternoon. But Friday would work. Just let me know what's good for you.
I'm a little surprised that you are getting resistance, because it was the Director himself who volunteered he
wanted to talk. Some of what I want to discuss with him has to do with his previous life, not his CIA life: I have
some chapters on the big decisions made along the way on Afghanistan, and what I'm hoping to talk with him
about are the broader lessons that emerge from a decade of war there. And a big portion of the book talks about
reorienting the totality of the national security infrastructure for an era of austerity, one in which we're not going
to be able to afford the kind of operations, and certainly COIN and nation-building exercises, that seemed
possible a decade ago. The political mood on these has shifted, and as a student of Vietnam (think of his West
Point thesis) I'm eager to get his thoughts. Background fine.
If you are getting blowback, it's probably because of the Iran sections of the book, and on that we should talk at
lunch.
In any case, as you say, time is getting quite short. Looking forward to meeting you.
All the best,
David

David sorry I missed your call. Off the record, I am detecting some reservations about working on the book
and wondered whether we might meetfor lunchto discuss exactly what you are interested in discussing
with the Director. Tomorrow is HPSCI day, but Friday or Monday would work. I know you have a deadline
looming, so I want to be responsive. Please let me know Didi
