D. candidate at Columbia University, has sued the CIA in New York under the Freedom of Information Act in an effort to get the Agency to disclose any documents that it might have on deceased British poets T.S. Elliot and Stephen Spender. The plaintiff seeks records on the poets to assist in writing his dissertation on literary and cultural criticism during the Cold War. The CIA had provided the Glomar re both requests -- neither confirming nor denying having any such records (U///rItIO) FOIA Requests (U//A1110) Requester Interested in Terrorism/Nazis (U//A214J8) A requester from Missouri asked for records on "any comprehensive lists of terrorist activities across the globe since August 14, 1945 [and] the files released [on] April 27, 2001 as per the 1998 War Crimes Disclosure Act, which pertain to prominent Nazi officials ... Adolf Hitler, Josef Mengele, Adolf Eichinann, Heinrich Mueller, and Klaus Barbie." � With regard to that portion of the request pertaining to terrorist activities, the FOIA case officer provided the requester with a list of previously released documents concerning terrorism from the Management of Officially Released Information (MORI) database. The FOIA case officer referred the requester to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) for information on the Nazi officials. (Di/M.140) Frequent Requesters File Bulk FOIA Requests (UNAItlej-Frequent requesters Jeremy Bigwood and John Greenewald, Jr. each submitted a package of 30 requests this week. Mr. Bigwood submitted requests primarily on Colombia and El Salvador. (b)(3) (b)(3) (b)(5) � Jeremy Bigwood and John Greenewald have submitted scores of requests over the years. Mr. Bigwood is a sqldescribed "mycotoxicologist, independent investigator and jounalist." Mr. Greenewald manages a webs ite called The Black Vault, which focuses on issues such as UFOs and government conspiracies. (U//Altilt College Student Interested in American Biologists (11//irt/C1) A student at the University of Pennsylvania requested information on ten American scientists and one Canadian biologist for her dissertation on the role of these biologists "as public intellectuals during the Cold War." (UHA-14443) OIM Declassification Center (U/IA!! in) ODC Team at Jimmy Carter Library. (UHAILIL),1_ A team of reviewers from the OIM Declassification Center (ODC) is scouring boxes of classified documents at the Jimmy Carter Library near Atlanta, Georgia, looking for CIA and other agency equities. As of this week, the team has completed over half of the more than 840 boxes of material at the library, finding that about 25% of the material is of interest to the CIA. Later this year, another ODC team will return to the Library and scan the identified material for return to OIM for review by ODC and other agencies, as appropriate. � ODC is executive agent of the interagency Remote Archive Capture (RAC) program. Under the RAC Program, Presidential Library documents are scanned at the libraries and returned in electronic format to ODC for review by participating agencies. In FY 2001, NARA is funding the library preparation and document scanning portion of the program. (U//Atuu) From the Archives: DCI Hillenkoetter Was at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 (UHATI:709.) In 1950, the Office of Legislative Counsel recorded in its log a US Senator's inquiry on, "whether the Director (of Central Intelligence) was a naval intelligence officer in charge at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941." The log, which was recently reviewed by the DCI team at the OIM Declassification Center, also contained the response, "... the Director (Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter) was present at Pearl Harbor as the Executive Officer of the Battleship West Virginia and did not have any intelligence responsibilities." � Roscoe Hillenkoetter, DCI from 1947 to 1950, was second in command of the USS West Virginia when the ship was sunk by Japanese torpedoes during the attack on Pearl Harbor of 7 December 1941. In the attack, the USS West Virginia's commanding officer was killed making Hillenkoetter the ranking officer in charge of abandoning the ship and organizing the rescue of survivors.
