(U/4141;43) From the Archives: President Truman Thanks Yale for Sherman Kent in 1950
(11//kItle The DCI team at the CIA Declassification Center recently reviewed two documents that indicated the important
support the academic community gives to the Agency. The two documents were 'thank you' letters to Yale President Dr.
Whitney Griswald -- one from DCI Walter Bedell Smith and the other from President Truman -- thanking Yale University for
granting leave to Dr. Sherman Kent to work for CIA. DCI Smith noted the "patriotic action of the University" and "Dr. Kent's
great importance as a historian and educator." President Truman stated, "It is realized that Dr. Kent's services will be greatly
missed by the University, but the importance of intelligence to the security of our country cannot be over emphasized."
Dr. Sherman Kent served 15 years as Chairman of the CIA's Board of National Estimates. He created the Studies
in Intelligence journal in 1955 and was recognized as one of the Agency's 50 Trailblazers in 1997. The CIA
University Sherman Kent School of Intelligence Analysis bears his name.
