A recent report from Hong Kong; 'which come to me frost a well-.known
and reliable busincoctitrul who makes his home in Manila but who was
in Hong gong recently., on business, states that a Colonel James 1�1(.�Cowcui
presumably a UK citizen -.was in Hong Kong on his way to Corrnuniat
China in an attempt to. expedite :the release or Mr James Thompson, the
veil-known US businessman fras�.Bangkok,,,,who.disappeared from, the Cameron
Highlands of Malaysia. over', a.yeareasee� 7friend reported hat McGowan
.was in Hong Kong on 23.Mar-68��.
2. According to my friend, Thompson is sairl. to have engineered his own
disappearance as part of a plan for Thompson to personally contact
Phanoskyong Pridi, ex7Tremier,efiThailatikknown at that time to be in
exile in Canton, China where .!; with oth-er.revolutionarica - he was
plotting to overthrow the present Thai Government, including the elimina-
tion of the Royal Family. ThompSonto mission was to dissuade Pridi from
proceeding. According to my informant,',Thaupson was successful in his
efforts with Pridi, whom he 1114 ,known andyorked with during World War II,
..� but was unable to convince the ether members of the revolutionary fp� up
who immediately either detained liiiflereice or kidnapped him and took
him to Red China. The distinction. would have to be made on the basis
whore the Thompson-Pridi conference took place. In any: event one Kurt
Annlinger, nationality unknown, � is said,O,have boon among the kidnappers.
