Montonero leaders, as well as Argentine Government officials, believe rightwingers may try to kill Firmenich Although most Montoneros have decided to abandon violence in favor of political action, the group is badly splintered, and some members support renewed terrorism. Argentine security officials blamed the Montoneros for several recent small attacks on military and police installations. Comment: President Alfonsin probably will press for Firmenich's conviction to avoid appearing to favor the left when leaders of the former military regime come to trial. The likelihood of Montonero terrorism will increase if Firmenich is harmed while in custody. Current Montonero strength is limited, however, and Argentina's security services, despite recent budget cutbacks, probably can contain any resurgence of terrorism. 3.5(c) -Zep-Set751- 8 23 October 1984 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 3.5(c) NR 3.3(b)(1) 3.3(b)(1) 3.5(c) 3.5(c) Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 Approved for Release: 2018/10/01 C05333901 NR
