National Intelligence Bulletin July 1, 1974
GREECE-CYPRUS
Tensions between the two countries are expected to
increase if President Makarios continues to implement
plans for removing Greek influence from the Cypriot Na-
tional Guard. Makarios is determined to assume total
control of the Cypriot armed forces, and thus prevent the
Greek-officered National Guard from providing clandestine
support to EOKA-B, the Cypriot terrorist group that favors
the union of Cyprus and Greece.
The Cypriot government believes that Kikis Constan-
tinou, a suspected Greek mainland intelligence officer,
is now the EOKA-B leader behind the current wave of
violence. Cypriot authorities believe that if Constan-
tinou is captured, EOKA-B will collapse. Except for the
possibility of an assassination attempt against Makarios,
EOKA-B is not considered a real threat by the Cypriot
government.
