the March 1982 elections for
the Constituent Assembly. The
US Ambassador to El Salvador
has told the press that D'Aubuisson's popularity as
leader of ARENA can be attributed to the fact that he
appeals to many people who are attracted to the idea of
restoring law and order with a strongman.
After his election as Assembly President, D'Au-
buisson announced that human rights in El Salvador
would be guaranteed and that the social and economic
reforms begun in October 1979 would be continued but
would be promoted in the future with "technique, speed,
and social dynamics."
D'Aubuisson was born into a middle-class family in
Santa Tecla, a suburb of San Salvador. (His mother, a
retired civil servant, is now living on a state pen-
sion.) He entered military school at the age of 15 and
was assigned to the National Guard after graduation.
He has attended intelligence courses at private police
academies in New York and Virginia. D'Aubuisson, 38,
is married to the former Yolanda Mungula and has two
sons and two daughters.
