ARGENTINA: Delay in Naming Next President
Argentina's ruling military junta yesterday announced
a 10-day postponement in naming an officer to succeed
President Videla next March. An announcement designating
retired Lt. General Viola--former Army Commander and con-
fidant of Videla--had been expected last Monday. Although
Viola is the overwhelming choice of the Army, the strongest
branch of the armed services, his appointment may have
run into unexpectedly stiff opposition from the Navy.
Naval officers mistrust Viola's ties with civilian po-
litical and labor leaders, and believe that as President
he would attempt to override the junta.
