Lt. General Viola, a member of the ruling military
junta, expressed surprise at US objections to recent
government security force raids on Argentine human rights
organizations, according to the US Ambassador in Buenos
Aires. Although personally opposed to the raids, Viola
said that the raids were carried out by the independent
judiciary, and there was "no way the executive branch
could interfere." Viola strongly denied allegations
that political prisoners held in secret camps were being
killed, and insisted that under no circumstances should
the Inter-American Human Rights Commission visit to 3.5(c)
Argentina next month be delayed or canceled.
