Argentina
The military government yesterday announced that it
has granted 70-year-old former President Hector Campora,
who has been in refuge at the Mexican Embassy in Buenos
Aires since the military seized power in early 1976, a
safe-conduct to leave the country for Mexico today.
Campora served only briefly as President in 1973, during
which time he released hundreds of leftwing and Peronist
supporters from jail and set the stage for Juan Peron to
return from Spain and become Argentina's President once
again.
COMMENT: Campora has had cancer in his neck for some time,
but the issue of allowing him to leave the country has been hotly
debated among military Leaders. He becomes the second prominent
political prisoner to be released recentlynewspaper publisher
Jacobo Timerman was allowed to go into exile in late September--and
this development is a further sign that President Videla and his
likely successor, General Viola, are prevailing over hardliners
in the military hierarchy. 3.5(c)
