3. French Communists ready to end strikes:
the French Communist
Party Committee on strike itrategy has
recommended to the Party Politburo that the
current strike wave be ended now, so that Communist forces can plan a
new strike campaign against the higher prices that will result from war
preparations. The Committee believes that prospects for exploiting
future strikes for political purposes have now improved, inasmuch as
the Party and the Communist-led General Labor Confederation have re-
covered some prestige and labor's bargaining position has been strength-
ened.
comment: This realistic French Communist
Party decision is in accord with the original preference of some General
Labor Confederation leaders for strikes of limited duration, which would
not overtax labor's present capabilities; the decision will forward the
Party's future strike efforts.
