Coup Talk Fueled
By Military Activity
All Over Argentina
Argentine military units were unusually
active last night in several parts of the
country, fueling speculation that a
military coup is imminent.
In one northern province the army was
reported to have occupied hospitals,
public buildings, roads, and com-
munications facilities. In the south, a
column of troops moved along an impor-
tant highway, posting guards at bridges
and intersections. The moves could be
part of the final preparations for a
takeover, although military spokesmen
declared they were part of the
government's anti-subversive effort.
Security forces did clash late yesterday
with terrorists in one provincial capital.
In Buenos Aires, separate meetings of
the armed forces commanders in chief, as
well as of the cabinet, contributed to the
air of expectation. Earlier yesterday the
city's mayor, a retired general, resigned
his position.
