attempts on the life of Idriss and Prime
Minister Ben Halim. Any serious dis-
orders would threaten the monarchy and
even the existence of the three-year-old
state.
A schism in the royal family became
apparent following the October assassination of the king's life-long
adviser by the queens nephew. The reportedly brutal execution
of the assassin on 6 February and reports of further persecution
of members of his family may precipitate a showdown between the
king and the Sharif branch of the royal family, which has consider-
able political support.
LATIN AMERICA
3. Nicaraguan president feels "doublecrossed by United States":
Nicaraguan president Somoza told
American newsmen on 9 February that
he would tell Vice President Nixon dur-
ing his forthcoming visit that Nicaragua
m r can policies "down the line" in the UN and the
Organization of American States and in fighting Communism
throughout Central America, while the "left-wing" government
of Costa Rica permits Communists to operate freely.
Somoza gave the impression that he is
deeply hurt and feels he has been doublecrossed because the
United States did not act "in a neutral manner" in the recent Costa
Rican revolution "despite all of his support." He hinted that the
United States, because of its aid to the "Communist-infiltrated"
Costa Rican government, may lose the support of a sizable bloc
of anti-Communist Latin American governments in the UN and the
OAS.

Comment: Neither Somoza nor any other
Latin American dictator is likely-To turn against the United States
on important international issues because of the Costa Rican affair,
which has strengthened American prestige among liberal and re-
formist circles throughout Latin America.
Costa Rican president Figueres, though
opportunistic and at times untrustworthy, has a long anti-Communist
record. It is his aggressive campaign against "dictatorships" that
has earned him the hatred of authoritarian regimes in the area.
