1. LEI Chen* was recently appointed the Generalissimo's personal representative
to implement the evacuation of Chinese refugees from Hong Kong to Taiwan.
LEI plans to depart for Hong Kong on 30 January and is authorized to use his
own discretion in deciding which candidates for evacuation will be chosen.
2. Priority will be given former Nationalist Government officials. Because of
the emergency, some evacuees will be permitted to enter Taiwan without the
usual documentation. The number of persons to be evacuated has not been
stated.**

3. The Nationalist Government believes that Hong Kong will fall to the Communists
at an early date.

Comment. On 9 January a Chinese vernacular newspaper in
Hong Kong stated that most of the 6,000 refugees at Rennies Mill Camp
mould be sent to Taiwan.
