MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Fatal Accident - Sqd. Ldr. Christopher Walker
It was agreed that, since the Sheriff had taken the wallet from the
body and looked through it, it was known that he was British. We
recorded to the Air Force the following explanation: He is one of many
exchange pilots between the RAF and the USAF. Since SAC has lots of
airplanes in England, he was tvikrning SAC tactics and procedures. He
was on a normal training mission for Mar; purpose. U pressed to admit
the type of plane, they were to state it was a Lockheed high attitude
aircraft. The information was passed to Generals Smart and Estes
and the General who heads the Public Information Office and they felt
that an early press release was essential due to difficulties with previous
releases when we had accidents. The release has been made... in
accordance with the above instructions..... with the exception that the
man's name and nationality were omitted with the statement that it would
be released pending notification of the next of kin. The newspapers are
aware that he is British and they are cooperating fully and will expect to
get the name of the man as soon as the next of kin are notified. The
press got a number of pictures of the accident but they will be sanitised
before they are released.
