I At this time, Subjects case wes not officially known to this Office eince he was being utilized "in place." This case cgme to the official attention of the Office of Securityyhen we were notified that a "high-level" defection was expected and that support and protection for this individual would be necessary. On this Oats, Subject and his 'wife" were first admitted to the Malted States as Type X immigrants. They were ilisued, respectively, Alien Registration Cards, #A-12 727 350 and 0-12 727 331. Subject's wife's card was listed under her maiden name. Subject and his wife visited Germany. They returned to the U.S. on 5 April 1961. In October of 19610 Subject's wife made a two-week trip to Germany. Such entry as approved on 3 October 1961 under Section 7 of the Central Intelligence Agency Act of 1949 (amended) March 1962 Subject wee re-located to the New York City area. 1 July 1962 24 September 1962 March 1963 9 April 1963 Subject's citrsct was amended Subject and his Oexnrr for a two- Preliminary inquiries were made regarding the obtaining of a pistol permit for Subject. Thetopermit was obtained and a pistol given to Subject. 19 zjril 1963 MS was re3ueeted to issue new Alien Registration Cards to Subject and his wife shoving an admIssion to the U.S. date of 15 April 1961 rather than the actual date of 12 January 1961. Subject's wife's card was amended to show her name as "03denburg." Nay 1963 July 3 26 August 1963 7 October 1963 The original Alien Registration cards were returned to this Office for appropriate disposition. Subject informed representatives of this Office that he was being surveilled. A private bill to allow the permanent residence of Subject and his wife in the U.S. was Wprove by the Congress. From about September of 1964 to the present, Subject has sought and received extensive national publicity in connection with his alleged claim to the Russian throne. 15 January 1964 It was determined that Subject had failed to comply with the provisions of his contract 964 h 1964 1964 31 July 1964 Subject was requested to appear before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. In light of the illness of bin wife, however, and at his request the appearance was postponed, Subject was subpoenaed to appear before the Sub- committee oa 13 April 1964. The subpoena celled and Subject's obligation to the Subcommittee was considered at an end. 10 August 1964 Subject was interviewed in the New York City area on the Barry Farber radio program. 21 August 1964 8 December 1964 15 January 1965 Kimsey, at his entatives of this Office concerning the t's case. usst was interviewed by Herman Kimsey called the Acting Director of Securi to inquire about Subject's case. The above request MUG denied. A letter WWI sent to Subject informing him that he had failed to comply with any of the provisions in bis contract, and therefore, the United States Government considered the contract nullified.' Subject and his wife again forwarded Alien Registration cards to INS requesting that the names be changed to show ROMANOFF.
