1. On 30 June 1950, Fernande VALERA Aparicio, Minister of Finance of the
Spanish. Republican Governilent in Exile, revealed that he had been infol(b)71)
by the Cuban government ce: its intention to cease financial support of4,Q3S
his government. A2 late at 1 June 1950, the Spanish exile government m
was paying such expenses ai rent and upkeep from funds received monthly,
through indirect means, from the Cuban government. Other Latin American
nations furnishing economic aid to VALERAle government are Guatemala and
Mexico*. Early in June, lirKiiTRA had been optimistic about getting
possession of Spanish Beeubaican official funds in Uruguey representing
a total of 60,000 pounds sterling, but at the end of the month his hopes
of obtaining the funds inUreguay had waned-
2. VALERA attributed the Cubans l decision to Socialist influence. He claimed
that wherever the Socialists go they stuccoed in freezing the credit of the
Spanish Renublican Government. It might be expecte& also, according to
VALERA, that enemies of the Republican Government would cut off the supply
of funds from Guatemala and Maim. VALMA pointed out in particular that
Communist influence in Guatemela had had some success in promoting the idea
of a Popular Front Spanish exile government, which would in effect freeze
out the Republicans.
