4. French Christian Workers stiffen anti-Communist policy:
3.5(c)
The leader of the French Christian Workers 3.3(h)(2)
Confederation has told US Embassy officials that
his organization is changing its decision to send a
representative to the Moscow Economic Conference
scheduled for April. If anyone is sent, it will be
an observer "of lower rank." The Confederation
leader has also refused the invitation of a
Soviet UN delegate for a meeting.
Meanwhile, the Christian Workers Confederation
has withdrawn its support of the coal strike instigated a week ago in the
Lorraine Basin by the Communist-led General Labor Confederation. Further-
more, the aggressive left wing of the Christian Confederation is now in
agreement with the right-wing majority in resisting the Communists' cam-
paign for unity of action among organized labor.
Comment: in mid-November the executive
committee of the Christian Confederation decided to send a delegation to the
anticipated Moscow conference and to recommend to the Christian Labor
International that it accept a WFTU invitation for joint discussions.
