Dear Al:
I have your letter of 29 March 1974 enclosing the internal
memorandum of G. P. Putnam & Sons which deals with Howard
Hunt's forthcoming book.
In view of the situation here, I found it necessary to send
copies of Putnam's synopsis to CIA's four congressional sub-
committees. Further, circumstances also required me to send
it to the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Leon Jaworski; the House
Judiciary Committee; and Mr. J. Fred Buzhardt, Counsel to the
President. I have merely informed them that we received this
unsolicited from "a former employee," and I requested that they
treat it on the same confidential basis on which you sent it to
me.
I appreciate your thinking of us in these times, and I
want you to know that I would not have forwarded the information
unless I felt the circumstances in Washington these days were
compelling. I trust you will understand.
Best regards.
Sincerely,
W. E. Colby
Director
