Approved for Release: 2017/01/18 C01474438 IEu.ivortezizAryi I 28 January 1974 MEMORANDUM FOR: Inspector General SUBJECT New York Post Inquiry Regarding E. Howard Hunt's Documentation I had a phone call today from Mr. David Rosenthal of the New York office of the New York Poet (212-349-5000, ext. 566, 210 South St., New York 10002) concerning the false documentation issued Hunt and Liddy, particularly in the name of Edward J. Warren. He said that the New York Division of Motor Vehicles had never issued a New York driving license to Edward J. Warren. He said that a credit card company also said they had never issued a credit card in the name of Edward J. Warren. Further, there was a bank loan card. Rosenthal said the bank averred it had never issued a loan or a bank loan card in this name. Rosenthal was pushing us for information about the division in our Agency which produced this kind of document, whether it was "SOP" to issue false documents in the name of real firms, etc. Apparently he is working on a story concerning the alleged damage caused to these firms by the issuance of these documents. I said that we made no comments about Watergate from here but we had told all we knew about it in excruciating detail to various congressional committees. I also volunteered to send him former Director Schlesinger's statement made on the Hill early on in the Watergate hearings. cc: DC/ DDCI OTS Is/Is=9,r Angus MacLean Thuermer Assistant to the Director Approved for Release: 2017/01/18 C01474438
