MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: MHCOLOR
1. As requested by the DCI I checked to see how the story of
the possible involvement of E. Howard Hunt with the MHCOLOR
program started.
2. said he received a call from Mr. James
Angleton stating that a statement made by the Office of Security on
their biographic profile of Hunt indicated that Hunt was of interest
to the CI Staff. Mr. Angleton told that this was not
true and he had so advised Mr. Osborn. In checking his staff Mr.
Angleton said that one of his officers, had a
vague recollection that Hunt may have had some connection with the
MHCOLOR program. told Angleton that Hunt had no
such relationship to the best of his knowledge.
surmises that Mr. Angleton may have mentioned
recollection to either DCI Colby, DDCI Walters or General
Counsel Warner because late in the afternoon of 31 January 1974 he was
asked to come up to the DCI's office where the aforementioned officers
were meeting. He said he was asked if Hunt had any connection with
MHCOLOR during the time he was a. consultant for the White House,
as the White House representative or in any other capacity.
said he replied not to the best of his recollection during the
period in which he chaired the MHCOLOR meeting but it was possible
he might have attended during predecessor,
time. He indicated he would check the minutes of the meetings and
advise the DCI's office, felt that Director Colby's
interest was chiefly in the July '71 - June '72 time frame.
