MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Alleaations re Intercept of George Meany's Mail;
1.S Subsequent to Laurence Stern's 10 January 1975
article in the Washington Post charging that the Agency
"secretly read the mail of AFL-CIO President George Meany"
and alleging the existence of a "postal monitoring scheme,"
persons having some knowledge of the facts were questioned.
A perusal of appropriate files is currently underway.
2. At this time there is no evidence whatsoever of
the existence of a mail intercept in cdnnection with this
allegation.

4. In a 26 November 1973 memorandum addressed to Chief/
CI) the Deputy Director for Operations noted his renewal
of tne project for the period 1 July 1973 to 30 June
1974 with the following stipulations:
S. We have as yet been unable to locate copies of written
material, be. they letters or other documentary pieces provided
to the Agency We are continuing to research this
matter and will advise on any further information which might
turn up.
