Approved for Release: 2017/01/18 C01435017 17 January 1975 Project RESISTANCE This project involved obtaining clippings of campus newspapers, radical "underground" publications and of other press media pertaining to campus protests and demonstrations. The activity covered the period from December 1967 through June 1973 and was both initiated and approved by the DDS. It was intended to provide information relative to potential threats to Agency personnel, installations and operations., and was initiated upon the specific observation of the DDS that various campus radical groups had begun to develop an alarming degree of organization and coordination. The OS Field Offices were given responsibility for collection. The instructions to the field at the inception of the project and as reiterated in 1971 were that existing assets were to be utilized and no attempts were to be made to recruit informants or sources in support of the endeavor. The project generated voluminous information, none of which was transmitted outside of the Agency. There is no indication that any threat was surfaced as a result of the project. The project was terminated in June 1973. Although OS files do not document the reason for termination, it seems likely it was concluded that either the perceived threat had diminished or that the project was unproductive.
