In connecticn with the Committee's inquiry regarding
Operation Phoenix, on behalf of the Committee, the under-
signed have concurred in the enclosed basic request for
documentary materials from the Department of Defense.
Please find enclosed a copy of the basic request for
documentairy materials directed to Defense and the Central
Intelligence Agency. The identical request has been forwarded
to both agencies because our initial inquiry indicates the
possibility of some substantial integration with regard to
both program responsibility and document origination. Materials
solicited in the basic request, to the extent they are in the
Department's possession, should be provided as soon as possible.
� For your information, ve are also providing copies of the
basic request regarding Phoenix which were directed to the Central
Intelligence Agency and the Department of State. You will note
that with respect to the request to State, we have made further
inquiries not contained in the basic request. In the event that
materAls Cbelieved to be in the possession of the Department of
State, as reflected by TabA of the State request), are in fact
contained in your files, please provide copies of such material
as soon as possible.
