4. (U) SOUTH AMERICA ANALYST: MR. FRIEL.
(U) THE THREAT OF TERRORIST ATTACK TO US INTERESTS IS LOW EX-
CEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES:
A. (U) ARGENTINA THREAT LEVEL: MEDIUM.
(C/NF) ACCORDING TO ARGENTINE DEFENSE MINISTER RAUL BORRAS,
THERE IS NO THREAT OF AN OUTBREAK OF SUBVERSION IN ARGENTINA.

FAR RIGHT AND CRIMINAL ELEMENTS. SERIOUS CRIME HAS INCREASED IN
ARGENTINA DURING THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS. A RECENT SERIES OF
KIDNAPPINGS AND THEFTS OF WEAPONS/AMMUNITION ARE OF GROWING CON-
CERN TO THE GOVERNMENT OF ARGENTINA. ALTHOUGH SOME EVIDENCE
SUGGESTS A RESURGENCE OF LEFTIST VIOLENCE IN THE COUNTRY, THE US
EMBASSY BELIEVES THAT THE POLITICAL ORIENTATION OF THE PERPE-
TRATORS CANNOT BE DETERMINED.
(U) UNIDENTIFIED GUNMEN BLEW UP A RADIO STATION IN BUENOS
AIRES, CRITICIZED BY RIGHTIST POLITICIANS FOR ITS LEFTIST TONE.
TEN MEN, THREE OF WHOM WERE DRESSED AS POLICE, CARRIED OUT THE
ATTACK ON 29 APRIL. THE BOMBING SEVERELY DAMAGED THE TRANSMIS-
SION EQUIPMENT BUT CAUSED NO INJURIES. THE ATTACK OCCURRED HOURS
BEFORE A TRIAL OF NINE FORMER ARGENTINE MILITARY LEADERS, INCLU-
DING THREE FORMER PRESIDENTS, WENT INTO ITS SECOND WEEK. THE
MILITARY LEADERS ARE ACCUSED OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ABDUCTION,
TORTURE AND DEATH OF THOUSANDS OF ARGENTINES DURING THE MILITARY
GOVERNMENT'S FIGHT AGAINST LEFTIST GUERRILLAS FROM 1976 TO 1983.
THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO LAST SIX MONTHS AND CONTINUED VIOLENCE
CAN BE EXPECTED FOR THE DURATION OF THE TRIAL.
