Approved for Release: 2021/03/25 C00928321 TOP SECRET SC No. 01923/68 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Directorate of Intelligence 4 February 1968 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM Pueblo Sitrep No. 31 (As of 7:00 A.M. EST) 1. North Korea has released another alleged confession by a US naval officer. Pyongyang Radio, yesterday, broadcast what was said to be the tape- recorded statement of Lt. (j.g.) Frederick Carl Shumacher Jr. He is the third of the Pueblo's six officers to be exploited in this manner. 2. Shumacher's "confession" contained exten- sive and detailed information concerning the Pueblo's mission and course, obviously designed to establish North Korea's version of the ship's capture. 3. In his statement, Shumacher "admitted" that he had refused to confess until "only a few days ago," but had been moved by the "humanitarian treatment" accorded him and was now "grateful for this opportunity of confession." As in the previous confessions of Cmdr. Bucher and Lt. Harris, he was allowed to conclude with a plea for forgiveness and release. 4. The Rumanian delegation to North Korea re- turned to Bucharest today. pproved for Release: 2021/03/25 C00928321 Approved for Release: 2021/03/25 C00928321 5.
