Upon arriving in HA TINH Province, Regiment 673 changed its name to Worksite 31 and organized its infil- tration training by battalion. Worksite 31 was composed of three battalions, Battalions 7, 8 and 9. From September to November 1967 Worksite 31 was located at TAM HA Village, CAM XUYEN District, HA TINH Province. The strength of the training battalions W&8 taken from the populated areas around CAM XUYEN District. Battalion 7 was composed of 150 cadres and soldiers armed with regular weapons: 81mm mortars, machine guns (type unknown), RDP automatic rifles; submachine guns, and Russian rifles. Battalion 7 had not carried its own ammunition in order to move faster. In late January 1968, Worksite 31 arrived in the QUANG NAM area. Battalion 7 received orders to operate separately. On about 27 January, Battalion 7 arrived in SON PHUC Village (District name unknown), QUANG NAM Province, in order to receive a supply of ammunition which had been transferred by laborers coming from the opposite direction. After receiving ammunition, Battalion 7 was disco- vered by an L.19 and a serious air strike was dealt by three jets at about 1600 hours. Three members were killed and after their immediate funeral on the spot, Battalion 7 moved to its objective.
