and abducted Source despite his unwillingness to
join znem and despite the pleas of his family. (Field Comment: Source claimed

and received training in haw to fire weapons and political indoctrination.
He practiced firing an AK-50 submachine gun for four days, using one round

On_the night of 30 January two unknown persons escorted Source to Road 80 one
kilometer from a base where 20 other youths, a female cell member used for
nliaisonvith other cells," and three cadres, all unknown to Source, boarded
three white Tri-Lambrettas. The unit cadre advised the team that it was on its
way to attack Saigon. The team members were armed, but had no mortars or other
heavy equipment. They received no weapons or supplies in addition to that
they carried. Source's cell sat parked in its vehicle in an alley throughout
the entire day. (Field Comment: Source could not identify the location.)
The cell leader left the group for apprnximately one hour,. possibly to contact
someone. At 0200 hours 31 January the team started to move out by Tri-Lambret-
ta. The vehicle arrived at Independence Palace at 0230 hours; the team
members got out and took position to tsegin the attack immediately from the park
in front of the palace. During this time other cell members attacked the GVN
police and troops guarding the area. Near dawn, the deputy cell leader
signalled the team to withdrew to a vacant, unlocked house near the. palace.
The cell continued their gun battle with GVN forces from this building and
refused repeated GVN calls to surrender. However. thp following night
(11 Jotni,s,.trl 'IP'''. members of the cell surrendered.
The interrogator found Source to be highly uncooperative and
concluded that he was probably lying. He constantly claimed to have no
knowledge of information to which he should have had access.)
