1. When the VC drafted Source in 1967, they told him that he was obliged to
Om Along since he had reached military age and the GVN tould take him if
he did not join: the VC. Source said that beginning in 1962, the VCwere
able to draft'SUccessfullz many village youthe because the Strategic hamlet
program of. the GVN failed to provide villagers with seourity. At the time
Source was drafted, five other youths were also taken along. Some tried to
escape by fleeing to CHOUIT hut were naught; no punishment was meted out.
Source became part of the guerrilla unit for two months.
Their duties were to guard cadre meetings, to patrol the village's six
hamlets, and to protect a. hamlet in which a meeting was held.
Source and five other members of his guerrilla unit were transferred to the
army on 30 December 1967. (Village guerrilla units contained from five to
10. men. If a unit became too large*, the VC would transfer the excess members
into the army.) They were assigned to Company 3, Battalion 6, which quartered
VUON THOM. Company 3 was formed from village guerrilla unit members and
'had a strength of 60 men. About 5 January 19680 Company 3 went to BA THU
area (XT 248025) Cambodia, an area in which many Cambodians were living.
The trip took about four nights. Company 3 remained in BA THU. for almost
a month and received military training. The company bought its food locally
at BA THU.. Since the soldiers were not permitted outside of their quartering
area, Source had no knowledge of other VC units which might have been there.
.Company 3's leader spoke Cambodian.
,]Company. 3. left4 THU on .27 January and returned to VUON THOM were it remained
until the 29th. Its leader then led the group from VUON THOM to BAU CO,
TAN_NHUT,..TAIT.TIEN, PHU LAM, and finally, to PHU THO HOA. The soldiers were
told that they were going to fight, but were not advised where. One of
Source's. comrades told him that he was at PHU THO HOA. otherwise. Source
would not have known. This comrade later escaPed.

(The commander was later killed by GVN troops who thought that ne was raking
his wounds.) Source did not know where Company 3 intended to go or what its
objective was.
There were four people in the house which the VC approached, an. old women,
an -adult man and woman, and children who were heard crying. The VC knocked
at the door and were admitted even though the occupanta were much afraid
of having them stay because of probable GVN reprisals. The occupants were
not in favor of the VC and gave them no help. The four VC had bean ordered
to remain in the house until the situation became less serious, and they
believed that their comrades would return to take them to safety.
pource aid not Know the /ate or the houses occupamo.
(Interrogator's Comment: Although Source appeared to be cooperative, his
company was shifted about and was not advised on their final destination
or target in the SAIGON-CHOLON area. Since the unit was composed of village
guerrilla youths, its morale was not high. Source's knowledgeability is
negative.)
