Ilubjects jecond 3riefin, for General Eisenhower in the Series
of IntoILLAnce Briefings for Presidential Candidate�
On Thursday* 25 3optethor 1952* at 1625 hours I boarded General
Eisonhower's carpaibm train at User Spring* Maryland. The General
ems on hit, lay to Baltimore* Maryland* on � speaking tour. The
General oomplotod his speech from the rear platform of the train and
about five minutea attor the train left the statlixso at exactly 1700
hours, 3enator Carlson escorted me to the Cbeervation Lounge where the
General :as seated alone.
I preaented the Intelligence Briefing paper to the General which
he read and aside from a few casual remarks and comments* he raised
only one question of substance. The Intalligence Bristiag noted that
"the present discussions on HMOs like the original plena for the
Middle 7:ast Comnands do not envisage Creek participation." -The General
inquired why Greek rarticipationimns not contemplated. Since I was
not tally prepared to elaborate on the details* I requested that he
permit me to get all the facts for the next briefing. He readily
agreed oommenting that "too often political and ailitary leaders have
cone into that area of Europe and net with representatives of some of
those countries thereby offending other countries not ineluded in the
talita � If
General Eisenhower spent about twenty-five minutes carefully
roading the briefing and his final comments were* "This certainly
presents a picture of a gradual.1,7 deteriorating situation all over the
world. Sometimes I wonder if it has gone beyond a point from which it
can 'oo rstriavod." Ho then expressed his thanks for the briefing and
at 1725 hours I left the Osservation Lounge and returned to the train
compartment of Ur. Tam Stephens who *ad arranged the appointment. I
left the train at the station in Baltimore and returned to 71ashington
'ay the next train.
