The writer's experiments along these lines have been universally successful and interesting resUlts have been Obtained, but testing along agency It was, ecause it was T s type of work. e actual experiments were begun,"both ere briefed concerning-the various ppssi ilities p'resentecfin the use of telephone administered SI control. The discussion also involved the essential work of attempting to Obtain "normal" appearance for operation activity. After considerable discussion, the following tests were run off: ermine basically whether or no could be placed in the state of dSI.and then con- itioned t ctt in "normal" maxmer.,both girls were sent to the M2tensio room of Each girl' in turn was called on the e ephone and placed in adeep trance state with instructions to maintain "normal" appearance. In each case, the other girl acted as an observer, sitting opposite the girl receiving the telephone call. Each girl was then called on the telephone and placed in a deep trance state and instucted to maintain "norraal'sappearance, each was instructed to return to the Operations Room, bringing the other girl with them. Both girls complied precisely and based upon nearly "normal". and the writer listening on the tele- phone own observa their manner and appearance was very phone during the Inductions and wei.-e able to detect only a very- slight loss of volume in the voice of the subject during the pro- ceedings; otherwise, there was no apparent change in the conver- sation. This test was regarded as successful. The second test involved a more complex method as follows: Each girl was placed in a deep SI state in the Operations Room. While under this control, they were told that after they were APPROVED FOR RELEASE DATE: p_)\ M awakened, they would procede to oom, ExtensioAI and from there they would receiv e ep one call from an individual who would be a friend of theirs (fictitious names, of course, were used at this point). This individual would carry on a normal con- versation with the girl and introduce a code word during the con- versation. At this point, the subject wOuld then pass from an "awake" state to a state of deep SI without CHanging expression and appearing at all times perfectly "normal". ,Thereafter, the girls were instructed to return to the Operations Room and upon seating themselves on the sofa, to immediately go into a complete sleep state. -Again, in-each----- case, each girl acted as an-Observer for the other .girl. This test was completely successful The girls were called on the telephone by the fictitious person and carried on a conversation. During the conversation, the code wordwas nentioned and, in each case, the girl receiving the telephone call, passed from an "awake" state to .a complete deep trance state, imintaining their eyes open and ap- pearing "normal" throughout the conversation. Each girl reported that the transition was completely perfect and w.ould certainly de- ceive anyone unless that person was specifically observing the r minute changes as the trance state was induced. Both and the writer again detected a minute change in the volume of the voice of the subject receiving the call, but no in- terruption whatsoever to the general conversation was noticed. The girls were watched as they moved 4 froM. oom to the 411111F Operations Room and, for a matter of record, the r w ng, expression, etc. was perfectly normal. Each girl, in turn, upon completion of the test and returning the the Operations Room, im- mediately passed into a deep state of sleep. The test has consider- able operational value since anyone using the code word or code -could take control of a thoroughly SI conditioned subject. Fur- thermore, to the casual observer or individuallabout'the subject','-. being so induced, it would be impossible to note that a transition had taken place. In connection with the above, and to lay, groundwork for the evenin ssary to ascertain whether or not der completeSI control, could m morige a safe combination, go to a safe, open same, and return to Operations Room under SI ontrol. This test was then tried with each subject. who has had considerable - experience in opening our Iuree_waymales, opened the safe.with- ut anvnrohl m and completed the experiment without difficulty. owever, only being instructed a few days pre- NUCUS y and o y.having opened a safe-two or three times before, was unable to2open the safe.
