ANATOLIY MIKHAYLOVICH GOLITSYN
Anatoliy Mikhaylovich Golitsyn (DPOB: 25 August 1926,
Piryatin, Poltava Oblast, Ukraine, USSR) was a KGB staff
officer who defected to the West while stationed in Helsinki'
in 1961.
Golitsyn joined the Soviet State Security Service in
the fall of 1945 after a short enlistment in the Soviet
Army. In the late 1940's while in Moscow, he dealt with
SK matters in the Far East. During that time he also
studied counterintelligence and English, as well as general
subjects, at the Higher intelligence School. In September
1951 he transferred to the CI Section in the Anglo-American
Department of the KGB Foreign Directorate. Two years_later .
he was assigned to the desk which handled activities against
emigres in Austria and Germany. From October 1953 until
August 1955 Golitsyn was stationed in Vienna where he was
assigned first to the Emigre Group and later to the British
Section of the Anglo-American-French Group. -colitsyn attended
the internal security counterintelligence course at the KGB
Higher School, Juridical Institute,from 1955 to August 1959.
In September 1959 he became a senior operational case officer
responsible for NATO information within the Treaty Organiza-
tions Direction of the KGB Foreign Directorate. Seven months
later he transferred to the American Section in the CI
Department. Then in August 1960 Golitsyn, using the alias
Klimov, joined the KGB residency in Helsinki to work against
foreign intelligence services as a CI officer. During this
tour, he was under diplomatic cover as a Soviet Embassy
Third Secretary/Vice Consul.
On 15 December 1961 Golitsyn with his wife and daughter
defected to US Intelligence in Helsinki. After his-defection
and arrival in the USA, he was debriefed by US Intelligence_
Since the sixties he has occasionally traveled to Western
Europe an�::: has maintained intermittent contact with US
and other Western services.
Golits;n has provided valuable insights into the operations
and perscnne1 of the KGB, updating previous holdings sub-
stantially. The most significant agent compromised by Golitsyn
was Geors P4ues, a French national, working in the NATO
Press RelazioA Office.
