Joint Chinese-Soviet Weather Modification Pro ect Re orted:
t e and the U are currently collabo-.
rating in a joint weather modification project. The project
which is und wa in the "Great Plains" area includes hail
su ression.
Comment: This is the most recent indication of direct
collaboration between the two countries in meteorology.
Soviet hail suppression technology has been exported to
several foreign countries during the past few years, pos-
sibly including the PRC. It is not clear where the
"Great Plains" areas are located, but field operations in
the Kansu and Shansi Provinces and Inner Mongolia have been
increasing. These operations involve attempts to increase
precipitation by cloud seeding and to disperse potential
hail clouds using shells fired from cannons and artillery
pieces. The latter method is a well-publicized Soviet
technique. Similar experiments also have been reported
in agricultural areas of Central and Northeast China.
A recent Soviet report on meetings held in 1973 in-
cluded a reference to Chinese attendance at a Bloc Climato-
logical Working Group meeting in Leningrad. Whether the
Chinese actually participated or attended only as observers
is not known, but this was their first known involvement
since the early to mid-1960s. This meeting and the re-
ported joint weather modification project imply at .
some resumption in loint meteorological activities.
