RHODESIA: Rhoaesian
nationalist leaders
and presidents of the
front-Zine African
countries reportedly
are considering ways
to improve the military
performance of the Rho-
desian guerrillas.
The recent Rhodesian army raids
into Mozambique/
/have convinced
most of the nationalists and their
allies that the guerrillas are
much weaker than had been assumed.
The latest raids, which began two
months ago, apparently have dis-
rupted guerrilla plans for in-
creased military activity. Ac-
tion in eastern Rhodesia by guer-
rillas based in Mozambique has
been generally at a low level since
the raids began.
The nationalists and the front-
line presidents are said to be
discussing the reintegration of
the main guerrilla force, repre-
senting the Zimbabwe African Na-
tional Union based in Mozambique,
with the much smaller force of the
Zambia-based Zimbabwe African
People's Union. These two guer-
rilla groups were merged briefly
in Mozambique early last year, but
the joint force disbanded after
the two factions engaged in armed
clashes.

The Indian government
arrested scores of Com-
munists December 31 as
a means of quashing a
national protest planned
by the Indian Communist
Party against Prime
Minister Gandhi's do-
mestic policies.
NOTE
Increased Communist criticism of
Gandhi's ruling Congress Party is
another aspect of growing tension
between the government and the
Indian Communist Party and its im-
patience with restrictions imposed
under the state of emergency.
