LEBANON: Talks that
had been scheduled to
resume today toward ne-
gotiation of another
cease-fire apparently
have been canceled be-
cause of renewed fight-
ing.
USSR-SYRIA: Syrian
Foreign Minister Khad-
dam arrived in Moscow
yesterday for a four-
day visit.
Syrian Foreign Minister Khaddam
and Phalanges officials met Pales-
tinian leader Yasir Arafat Sunday

at Ayn Sawfar.
Fighting continued yesterday in
several other areas, particularly
just south of Tripoli where the
Palestinians have opened up a new
front. Syrian forces are maintain-
ing their blockade of Sidon and of
towns in the northern Bekaa Valley.
His trip, which had not been an-
nounced beforehand by either side,
is the first high level Syrian-
Soviet contact since Premier Kosy-
gin's visit to Damascus early last
month.

CUBA: Two Cuban mer-
chant ships carrying
troops from Angola
docked Saturday at
Mariel.
We do not know how many troops were
aboard, but the two ships could
accommodate 1,000 to 1,500 men.
A convoy from Angola that included
at least one troop transport ar-
rived in Marie] on June 9. A
Western press correspondent, who
saw busloads of troops in Havana
shortly after the ship's arrival,
put the number at "about 600." A
third convoy of three Cuban ships
is now in southern African waters
and may be returning to Cuba soon.
We still lack information about
whether the returning troops are
simply being rotated home or if
Havana is reducing its troop
level in Angola.
