a. The UN Security Council is
still grappling with the problem.
b. It will discuss today a
new resolution by the nonpermanent
council members, designed to put
a UN-sanctioned force on the island
and to begin mediation efforts.
c. Papandreou goes along with
the new resolution but Makarios has
not yet committed himself.
d. On the island things are
not getting any better, though the
fighting that broke out on Saturday
in the suburbs of Nicosia And near
Larnaca has been contained.

is beginning to put the pressure on
us. He says it is common belief in
Greece that the US supported the dis-
patch of a peace force to the island
in order to backup Turkish population
movements which would result in de
facto partition.
j. He wants the US to make a
statement saying it does not consider
partition an appropriate solution.
k. The Greek press reached a
new height of sensationalism on Sat-
urday. In banner headlines, papers of
all political parties reported the
warning given by Papandreou to the US
and UK that, while war between Greece
and Turkey would be "insanity," the
Greeks will accompany the Turks to
the "insane asylum" if necessary.

rapidly disappearing. Paris has not
yet given its agreement to the Cypriot
request for an ambassador in Paris.

said to be seeking the support of
Prince BounOum for a coup against
Sihanouk.

contacts with the East.
b. In a partisan radio-TV address
on Friday he called for responsible
German political elements to try to
reach agreement on a basic policy to

for example, in the Berlin pass talks.
c. Erhard has asked Brandt to
meet with him this week to discuss
the question of how to deal with East
Germany.

A. Italy-USSR First Deputy Premier Kosygin will be
visiting Italy this month to inaugurate a Soviet
industrial show at Geneva.
B. Venezuela Raul Leoni, successor to Betancourt, who
wi1I be inaugurated in March, is off to a bad start.
The Christian Democratic Party has refused to continue
its present coalition status thus leaving Leoni's
party in a position where it cannot count on a firm
majority in Congress.
