1. Panama
a. The lull in violence may
not last long. Several public
meetings scheduled for the weekend
could lead to more bloodshed.
b. Last night's rally was
dominated by the communist Peoples
Party. Agitators were sprinkled
throughout the crowd to applaude
and to chant anti-US slogans.
c. In addition to attacks on
the US and demands for Canal Zone
sovereignty, the speakers made veil-
ed threats against any retreat by
President Chiari.
d. The President has not budg-
ed from the demand that the US promise
to negotiate a new canal treaty as a
quid pro quo for restoring diplomatic
relations.
e. Yesterday afternoon he order-
ed all Panamanian diplomats home from
Washington, and requested that all US
diplomatic personnel, except consular
officials, leave Panama.
? f. More trouble is looming on
the diplomatic front. Miguel Moreno,
a former foreign minister noted for
his bitterly anti-US views, has been
appointed Panama's new ambassador to
the OAS.

2. Cyprus
a. Circulation of atrocity
stories may bring new violence on
Cyprus.
b. Pictures of recently ex-
humed bodies of Turkish Cypriots
killed during the intercommunal
fighting are being distributed in
the Turkish community.
c. Some Turkish Cypriots
are now insisting on a settlement
based on autonomy within a federal
state.
3. Indonesia-Ma- a. Embassy Tokyo reports that
laysia Sukarno in his meeting with Attorney
General Kennedy agreed to stop mili-
tary confrontation in Borneo as a
preparatory step to a tripartite
meeting of Indonesia, Malaysia and
the Philippines.
b. Sukarno said if the
Malaysian reply were-favorable, he
would issue a public statement on
Thursday.
c. Ministerial level talks
would precede a summit meeting.

4. Zanzibar
? e. Sukarno proposed that any
mutual withdrawal of troops from
the Borneo border be inspected by
representatives of a neutral nation.
a. The shuffling of government
posts suggests that, for the moment,
President Abeid Karume is gathering
more power to himself.
b. Two of the most outspoken
pro-communists have been downgraded.
c. Prime Minister Kassim Hanga
has been given the lesser position
of vice president. Abdulrahman
Mohammed "Babu", the main instigator
of the coup, is now minister of
trade and external affairs rather
than defense minister.
d. The defense and home affairs
portfolios appear to have been trans-
ferred to the President's office.

h. Today's announcement that
the government has proclaimed itself
a "people's republic" is straight
out of Peiping's book.
i. Tass reports this morning
that the USSR has recognized the
new government. Communist China,
Yugoslavia, North Korea, East Ger-
many, and Cuba have already done so.

6. India
a. Spaak has told our Ambas-
sador that Belgium will hold the
line and not recognize Communist
China at present, though this will
create considerable political
difficulties.
b. He said De Gaulle desires
to recognize the Chinese not because
of any economic, material or politi-
cal advantage to France but only as
a political gesture to show French
independence of the US.
c. Spaak also agreed to do
his utmost to convince the Japanese
not to follow the French lead dur-
ing his visit to Tokyo next week.
a. Mrs. Pandit has told Ambas-
sador Bowles that Nehru's doctors
say he can return to his desk in
six weeks if he is careful, but that
he must not travel or make formal
appearances.
? b. The Ambassador observes
that the personalities around Nehru
are all anxiously maneuvering for
influence in a situation where the
distribution of power is still not
clear.

to help Peron in Argentina.

a Peron emissary
traveled from Spain to Cuba in
early January, at Castro's invi-
tation,to discuss "a matter of
importance and urgency to both".
c. Peron has been encouraging
revolutionary activities in Argen-
tina by various factions of the
splintered Peronist Movement.

A. ECUADOR Rumors are circulating in Quito that
Colonel Freile? the opportunistic air force repre-.-
sentative in the ruling junta, may be ousted soon.
Freile,
has been tacitly cooperating in the anti-Junta activ-
ities of ex-President Arosemena.
B. INDONESIA _Demonstrators were out again this morn-
ing. First stop was the British Embassy to protest
the detention in Hong Kong of two ships to be used
to transport Indonesian pilgrims to Mecca. The
demonstrators read a petition urging the govern-
ment to break relations with the UK. Next stop
was .the US Embassy *here they chanted "Panama
yes, Yankee no" and threatened to confiscate
American property. if Seventh fleet vessels moved
into the Indian Ocean,
