3. Saudi Arabia - a. Ambassador Hart thinks Fay-
Yemen sal will not agree to extending the
UN mission again when its mandate ex-
pires on 4 January.
b. He feels Nasir's pledge to
take out 5,000 troops is not nearly
enough to satisfy Faysal and believes
that by mid-December the crown prince
will be willing to risk the departure
of "Hard Surface."
c. Faysal might hope that an
escalation of the conflict would
then force the US and UN to do some-
thing drastic.
d. Hart says UN mission chief
General Gyani agrees and sees little
chance of Naeir's complying with the
Bunker agreement for at least a year.

4. Algeria
a. AFP reports a wave of specu-
lation in Algiers on the status of
Defense Minister Boumedienne.
b. He has not been seen pub-
licly for several days and missed
the reception at the Soviet Embassy
celebrating the 7 November revolu-
tion.
Ce
/the defense minister might be
eased out because of his free-wheel-
ing activities. He had been direct-
ing operations on the Moroccan bor-
der when Algerian forces temporarily
ignored the cease-fire agreement.

NOTES
A. Egypt Egyptian reaction to the foreign aid bill
amendment has been predictably strong. Ambassador
Badeau reports that Nasir is said to have talked of
nothing else when he met Willy Brandt in Cairo on
8 November. Egyptian news media are having a field
day and putting most of the blame on alleged Israeli
influence.
B. Turkey Turkish military leaders may soon take a
stronger hand in the government in order to offset
the growing strength of the opposition Justice Party.
The Justice Party?composed largely of supporters of
the old Men deres regime--is likely to emerge from
local elections on 17 November as the country's
majority party. The party's influence will be
boosted even more if Premier Inonu, whose coalition
government is shaky, is forced to turn to it for
political support.
C. Berlin ?A nondismount size US convoy of 13 vehicles
cleared Babelsberg and Marienborn checkpoints without
difficulty this morning. The only hitch was about a
one-h9ur wait at Babelsberg while the Soviet commander
finished his Wheaties.
D. US-USSR An AP dispatch this morning says the USSR
has arrested Yale Professor Fred C. Barghoorn as a
spy. The US Emb ssy has been informed but has not
been allowed to see him. Barghoorn is identified
as an expert on Soviet affairs who formerly served
in the embassy in Moscow (1942-47) and is in the
USSR on leave from Yale.
